When we think of gyaru these days, I sometimes think some people don't really see gyaru in its modern form per say, everyone thinks of D.I.A belts and Ayumi Hamasaki, Old Egg and Koakuma Ageha and typical depictions of what is commonly associated as 'Heisei Era Gyaru'. But Heisei era is long gone, so who are the top gal Models of 2023?
First thing, for those who aren't familiar with the words 'Heisei' and 'Reiwa' and haven't searched it up yet, Heisei was the most recent japanese period, periods being defined by the current emperor. The Reiwa period is the current period, as the former emperor of Japn abdicated, meaning a change of rulers simply signified a new era, Reiwa, starting in May 2019. Heisei era started in January 1989 and ended in April 2019. If you read my History of Gyaru blog post, you would know Gyaru's popular lifespan is entirely in the Heisei era of japanese history. Because of this, most references of Gyaru people look upon even till this day come from the Heisei era of japanese history.
Because of this, people tend to not really look at our current era of gyaru, and sometimes when they do, they completely dismiss it as 'not gyaru' but thats a fight i'll pick another day. So, who do i consider top gyaru of our current Reiwa era?
Tanaka Fuki - LOALO Model
' Love LOALO Love LOALO ใใกใใฏใคใฑใฆใ ๅฏๆใ' Recognise those lyrics? Of course you do, unless you are literally living in Heisei era, you can't not be a gal and not know of LOALO's hit song 'XOXO Gal version' a gyaru spin on the original hit song XOXO by popular DJ group, Repezen foxx. Tanaka Fuki is one of LOALO's most well known models. The half italian gal often sports huge colourful hair, and her trendy tik toks always gain lots of views.
I think Tanaka fuki is definitely one of the more popular gals in terms of social media rather then modelling like the other gals on this list, but I couldn't do this list without adding her.
Momoa Seto - New Egg model
Every one and their mama gal knows GAL IS MIND. The song went crazy viral around the time gyaru rlly picked up popularity. The 20yr old model is a fan favourite, often on the front page of the new egg magazine. Momoa is essentially your picture reference of a gal, kurogal in a kogyaru seifuku, long nails, piercings, bleached hair, big lashes, and leg warmers. Her distinct look has made her popular in the gal community, not just with oversees gals but even non gals who show interest in gyaru.
Ito momo - Ageha Model
Ito Momo, I think it was good to put her here. The former new egg model burst onto the modelling scene during the revival of New egg in 2019 after they ceased publication 5 years earlier. Momo was one of the New Egg original models along with others like Mami of softboiledegg (Now in new nuts), Amemiya and other current and former egg models. New ageha girls have a very distinct style you won't find in egg, or nuts, or Loalo or any other gyaru magazine really. At first appearance those who don't know gal that well may even mischaracterise current ageha and its models as not being gals, but once a gal, always a gal at heart. After graduating from New egg last year, 2023 has been a good year for momo, doing modelling, brand work, and is easily one of the most popular gal models with over 500k instagram followers. You simply can't make a list like this without including Momo I'm afraid.
Katomika - New Nuts Model
To be honest, Katomika is one of the gals I rarely see ppl admire, but honestly, I'm a huge katomika fan. The 25yr old Mama gal of 2 is most recognisable by her tan and bleach blonde hair. To be honest, when I look at katomika, I really just think she screams Reiwa gal. I've always been a fan of that onee gal older sister look, so I think Kato mika deserves her spot here. I also wonder why people never talk about NUTS that often anymore. Maybe its because the public simply associates gyaru with not only teenage girls, but a relic of the past, so the concept of gals in their mid to late 20s still... being gal is some what laughable unfortunately. But Katomika is definetly one of my top reiwa gals for 2023
This blog post is some what short, mainly because I could've done like 2341894 gals but I decided to choose the 4 that I thin are the top, I will make another list of gals who have potential to be the top of 2024, and other gals i think need more love, but all in all, thank you for reading---
